Kia ora,
I just found an old concert program, apparently Josef Horak was authorised by the composer to perform a version of the Martinu Sonatina on Bass clarinet. has anyone heard this, or knows where to get the bass clarinet part?
(assuming some transcription changes were made, I guess until I've heard it I've no way of knowing if any were made).

Donald, I don't have any answers to your questions, but why would any 'transcription' be required? Just play the soprano clarinet part as written, and it will sound an octave lower, done.

DS,
As I recall, you played a HS contest on bass clarinet performing Mozart, right? A Superior rating I believe.

Dr. Hank, you have an amazing memory! Close, it was actually von Weber's 2nd concerto. Granted, it was about 45 years ago.....but back then there were very few solo works written specifically for bass clarinett. Things are much different nowadays. I still find that particular work easier to play on bass than on soprano clarinet

I am familiar with a couple of the transcriptions that Horak performed and recorded (always "authorised" by the composer, or transcribed by the composer).
- One was originally recorded with no changes, but later in his career he started making octave transcriptions (never to make it easier, the guy was the first real bass virtuoso)
- One had many changes (to voicing and articulation, not to actual notes)
So I'm wondered if anyone was familiar with his performances of THIS piece. I'm not sure if his wife (his piano partner) is still alive, but I'll try writing to her.
Thanks
dn
