I am wondering what some of the must have clarinet recordings are. Please enlighten me. I am thinking both jazz and classical.

Cheers,

For Goodman, I'd suggest "Slipped Disc" recorded in 1945 with his sextet. Simply AMAZING!

I second Brahms Sonatas played by David Shifrin. I must admit that Brahms is absolutely NOT "my" composer, but what Shifrin does with this music is out of this world. Also I personally think that absolutely "must" is his recording of Copland's Concerto.

Hey_Pauly...

I'd add a few more to the list (swing/jazz/pop):

Here's Benny Goodman with Red Nichols' group: Sheik of Araby (Solo at 1:29)
Benny Goodman Sing Sing Sing (extended)
Here are a couple tunes with Barney Bigard: Lament for Javanette
Clarinet Lament
Edmond Hall Flyin' High
Irving Fazola My Inspiration
Johnny Dodds Sobbin' Blues
Artie Shaw Concerto

Some of these are "must" just as representative of the musician's larger work, others are "must" because they were exceedingly popular in their time and hold historic importance.

There's so much out there that is left out.
