Hi,
Does anybody find it really difficult to get clarinet breathing just right when they have a bit of a high temperature? I've had a very minor virus for a few weeks, that just messes up my temperature a bit, but I can't play my clarinet at all. I just wondered if anyone else finds that too. It's really dull waiting for it to go away.

HI Sunny, Don't know where you are, but here in France there is a very tenacious virus going around that, while it doesn't cause an outright fever, make life miserable with sneezing fits and a terrible runny nose on and off over weeks. YOu think it's over, then it comes back for another whallop. Hopefully being on the downside of the beast, I doped myself up to get to rehearsal monday and if I was able to play, the antihistamine had me reading my part cross-eyed ! Hoping this will be over soon so I can get my flu shot so it doesn't spoil the winter season. Speedy recovery to you !

Hi Djudy,
Thanks, that's really encouraging to hear actually. I had this since the beginning of September and it nearly went away after three weeks and then came back for a second go at the beginning of October. It sounds as though I'm maybe going through a mild version of the thing that you're talking about.
Thanks for telling me. I really was beginning to feel as though it would go on forever. Hopefully it will go away soon. :-)
I know what you mean about reading the music cross-eyed. I did go to a rehearsal at the end of September when I thought I was over it, and got really really dizzy after playing one long passage. Ooops!
Thanks!

I rarely get a cold (last time 4-5 years ago), but don't recall it really affecting my breathing and playing. In 2007 I was almost delirious with a bad one, high temperature and all. Played the Weber Concertino during the worst day of it. The 1st flutist said it was the best she ever heard me play (it WAS very good). Still don't know if that's a compliment though--what about all the other times.....

Hi Tom,
That's interesting. I know at least one other clarinettist who can definitely play really well with the flu. Must be me then.
