relax

After watching countless numbers of musicians over the years, my observation of whom i enjoy the most are those that look totally relaxed in performance. I strongly encourage those of us unfamiliar with the pianist Vladamir Horwotiz to watch some of his performances. He truly was remarkable at appearing poised and relaxed as if the keyboard was magically playing itself.
Granted the clarinet is not a piano and has challenges unique to the instrument, but. keep in mind that those that look relaxed are most pleasant to watch and listen to from my perspective.

Perform in front of a mirror, if you look awkward with excessive body movements, tense shoulders, arms and fingers, your audience might not enjoy your performance as much as you they could and possibly not as much as you might think.....

I agree with this thought. Some motion seems ok, most less so. It's not an easy call; some music seems to imply physicality. I like the recent Istvan Kohan video, but it represents a rare exception for me. When in doubt, minimize.

Most great pianists, including Horowitz, have focused their performing energies on producing their aural intentions, rather than on visual show. However, they rarely have appeared "relaxed" to me. Here's a link to a great performance by Horowitz; the intensity that he radiates is palpable.
