 Thumb tube removal
Author: RefacerMan

I am having a problem removing a threaded thumb tube from a Buffet R13 clarinet. I have an old thumb tube removal tool which I have tried to use, but the thumb tube is being rather stubborn. Are there any "tricks" to help ease the removal of the thumb tube? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Heat. I use a soldering gun - the kind that looks like a gun where you can cut off the tip and have two metal prongs to touch the thumb tube.

Is it threaded or does it have oblique grooves?

Either way, use a heated mandrel to melt the bond and then twist it out.

Chris.

Just a question, but first you got your answer above. Why do you want to remove it?

Be careful how you heat this as the wood can get damaged while you remove it and a nightmare putting it back if the wood gets damaged, even cracked. So I repeat, why do you want to remove it? Be really careful.
