What pieces for violin and pn work well on the clar
Author: ruben

As our repertoire is limited-though larger than for other wind instruments- what suggestions would you have for pieces for violin and piano or viola and piano that would work well on the clarinet? My first suggestion: Schubert's Sonata op. post. 137, No. 1, D384. The range is perfect for the clarinet and the color and spirit of the piece suit the clarinet very well.

A few sonatas that work really well.

Schubert Arpeggione (I play it in g minor/ clarinet key is a minor) Yes, I know it is not officially a violin/viola piece, but it is standard repertoire for viola and cello.
Schumann violin Sonata #1 in a minor
Brahms violin Sonata #1 in g major Op. 78
Prokofiev Op. 94 D major Sonata. (Originally flute then violin)

Each piece takes some octave changes. Also, it is often a good idea to change a virtuoso effect that is string instrument specific to one more suited to the clarinet. This is very relevant in the Schumann above.

The Clara Schumann Romances for violin and piano would also work beautifully.

Most of the Mozart violin sonatas don't work well, but there's a B flat major one (kv380 I think... Or 378?) that work reasonably well. Very hard work on the clarinet to match the light sound a violin can get easily in the upper range. Dn

Donald: I agree that the Mozart sonatas don't work well, unfortunately. The violin accompanies the piano quite a bit: they are sometimes sonatas for piano and violin obligato. The clarinet doesn't have the ability to accompany that the violin has.

The Frank Bridge Four Short Pieces for Violin and Piano work wonderfully on clarinet, especially the Meditation. A number of the Handel Sonatas for violin and piano that don't have lots of double stops are excellent as well, especially the one in F Major.

I've also read the Beethoven Romance Op. 50 (originally for violin) and the Glazunov Elegy (originally for viola) and those have been excellent too.

A really interesting transcription I'm finishing up is taking the Glazunov Saxophone Concerto...and setting it for the Viola! The range works perfectly, but it's a little strange when played with orchestra because of the (now) duet that takes place with the principal violist. :)

gwie: Have you transcribed Debussy's Rhapsodie for alto saxophone? It would be nice to have another Debussy piece to play. Thank you.

Granted it's not a string piece, but the J S Bach Concerto in A major for oboe d'amore works great for A clarinet. Challenging and fun.

Jim and everybody: I said violin and piano, but what I actually meant, or should have said, was: anything that works. Bagpipes and piano; jew's harp and piano: if it works well on clarinet and piano, I'm game! We have a good 20th century repertoire for these two instruments, so any 19th century, Romantic period works would be welcome suggestions, though I myself suggested the Debussy Saxophone Rhapsodie, which doesn't fit in that category.

I believe people have been known to play the Cesar Franck violin sonata on clarinet (handy key of A major) and also the Brahms FAE scherzo.

I've performed the Bach Chaconne (violin part), but it is unaccompanied.

Here is the Mozart violin sonata I mentioned, Kv 378. I've performed it a number of times on clarinet, most of the violin part is perfectly playable on the clarinet (though, as I said above, it can be hard work!). I think there were a few spots in the slow mvt where I left the Piano on its own.
Many of these sonatas were originally named "sonata for piano and violin", and have violin parts that are not suitable to play on clarinet. This was the one I found most suitable though there may be others. I also arranged K 380 for clarinet and piano, using the clarinet part from the Quartet version and making a piano part from combining the original piano part with the strings from the quartet. The slow mvt I found was fine to use the original. This was a lot of work and only exists in hand written form- I do intend sometime to revive this, record it, and share the music but that's a project for the future....

Donald: Looking forward to your making this available. Paying for this should not be an issue for most of us. You have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the matter: this is not a haphazard choice for you.
