I have been using traditional VanDoren reeds for over a year now, and I just tried out V12 on a whim. I REALLY like them. I don't get why but they just sound nicer. Do any more experienced players know why this would be? (I am only in my second year of playing.) Thanksssss!

Every reed and mouthpiece are a marriage. You just found a reed that works better with your mouthpiece. If you tried a few reeds from every reed brand and series available, I am sure you would find one even better, and many that wouldn't.

The V12 reeds are cut to a different style than the blue box reeds.
They have a thicker blank, a slightly different width at the butt end and also a different shape of curve and rather thicker tip.
What reed works best is a combination of the reed and the mouthpiece it is fitted too. So your mouthpiece may be more suited to the V12 style than the traditional blue box reeds.
Often the V12 works best with longer / closer lays, but in the end it's just trial and error.

The V12 also tend to be a stiffer reed. I would also check out the 56 Rue Lepic and the V21 (which I find to have the most color).

My B45 mouthpiece doesn't go along very well with V12 reeds (I tried 3 and 3,5), the sound is airy and stuffy. I usually play traditional blue box 2,5 or 3

The V12 reed is cut from a thicker blank, so the cane AT THE TIP is from a part of the tube that is furthest from the bark... making the TIP less springy/stiff than a reed cut from a thinner blank (ie blue box vandoren). The overall design may be stiffer (esp on a shorter lay mouthpiece) as the centre of the reed is thicker, but the cane at the tip is LESS stiff.

I use the V12s (3.5) on my Amati C Clarinet. I learned that the 1st chair Bb clarinet player in college used then and I wanted her dark tone quality. So I got them when I got my C Clarinet. The tone quality on the C Clarinet is a little brighter than the Bb but the V12s, with my Pyne crystal mouthpiece give me EXCELLENT tone quality on the C. I've just received the V12s (4) for the Eb Clarinet and I have to see what the tone quality is going to be like on there with them. Once I find out, I'll report to you all.

I'm currently using Vandoren blue box reeds. I also got a sample pack of Vandorens including a V12, Rue Lepic and V21. Out of those I like the V12 the best. So I will eventually be settling on the blue box and the V12's. Right now between the two I seem to prefer the blue box most of the time.

Try the Pilgerstorfer Dolce ... get about 1/2 strength stiffer ... amazing. I use a #4 on most MPs ...
