I have two older R13s (one Bb and one A). A few years ago I had the thumb rest on my Bb moved up almost to the top of the lower joint and replaced with the adjustable one. With a thumb rest pad the net effect is perfect placement as the original contorted my hands and caused pain. I have an older Protec single case and put the instrument in and noticed no difference in how it fits.
Just recently I was offered the opportunity to play in an orchestra, although I don't know if it will be a longer term thing or not. My A hadn't been played in a long time so I had it looked at by a tech and also had the thumb rest moved and changed on that one. Well, when I went to pick it up I realized the Buffet Attache case is very fitted to the thumb rest and it no longer fits well in the case at all. Neither does the Bb. There is a space for music with some flex so it is probably OK, but if I put much music in it there could be an issue.
My question is does anyone know about the Protec or Allora double cases (both reasonably priced) and whether a higher thumb rest configuration would fit better in one or the other of them? Is it worth investing in one just to possibly store the A until another orchestra opportunity comes up? Also the Buffet Attache has the lower joint/bell combo and when I first took it out after years of not playing I couldn't get them apart.

Funny, I've done the same thing to both of my 10Gs (using Buffet movable thumb rests), which I carry in a Buffet attache case like yours, I think, and I haven't noticed the same problem. But I don't use pads on the thumb rests, so maybe that's a difference. You could try to hollow out a place for the thumb rests in their new spots. Or punch a hole in the cloth to make it easier to push into the Styrofoam (I think) underneath. I have a feeling mine must have made their own adjustments over a short period of time.
Unless the cosmetic damage is really an issue (if you have to cut the covering), it's a lot cheaper than getting a new case.

Another trick, if you enjoy working with your hands, is to pull up the cloth in the case and reshape the areas that need to be changed. Someone who works with wood and cloth may also be able to shape your case to your satisfaction. I have 'tweaked' many of my cases.

I have two different style Bb clarinet Protec cases and they both have a large ie 2" long cut out for the upper end of the lower joint to accommodate different placements of thumb rests.

Hi Musikat,
If you just push down to where the thumb rest should be, the styrofoam will give and you can make enough space .
No need to cut the fabric, you can push with your finger.
Now, IF you got "pochette" style case, that one just does not have
any space for expansion but the attache case can be adjusted. At least I did it with my case.

Thanks for the tips. I did try pushing it down with my fingers, and it is a bit better, but still not great. Right now I am waiting to see if I am going to be doing more orchestra playing. If so I will order a new case anyway since mine doesn't hold much and a new Protec is less than a case cover for the Attache case!

For a small fee I can take that Buffet case off your hands 😁.
But seriously, I may need an extra Bb case so would be intrested if you decide to sell.
