 Markneukirchen and Kraslitz
Author: Bill

What was going on there in the teens and early 1920s in Kraslitz? Has anyone done a dissertation or a private investigation into instrument manufacturing in Germany and the Czech Republic during the early 20th century? It seems to me they out-manufactured Paris.

A "click-trip" to Kraslitz on Google Earth reveals a sad town dominated by a large, somewhat frightening blocks-long building (Amati?) interspersed with gorgeous old architecture.

Some years ago I visited Markneukirchen and on my way there inadvertendly crossed the then invisible border from Klingenthal/ Germany to Kraslice/ Czechoslovakia. That was quite a moving experience, in view of recent history. The whole region formerly was called "Musikwinkel"with instrument makers in every town and village. So I posted the following:

Btw.: The German name was Graslitz, still in the early years of Czech government, only later on renamed in Kraslice.

Thank you! I look forward to reading your posts. I have a Kohlert "Bohemia" Bb (Boehm) and am about to receive a Uebel 621 (Oehler system) and a very old (presumably stencil) Oehler system from "Kraslice" stamped Johann Michl and Sons.

For Johann Michl & Sohn Graslitz 1870-p1937 New Langwill Index has only a short entry: mentioned for brass and also string instruments, a flute and a horn reported. I saw (in a German forum) a bass trumpet with their marking. So most probably they were merchants, not instrument makers themselves.

Absolutely. That's why I said the Michl clarinet is a stencil. Probably made by Kohlert. Although, not sure Kohlert made true Oehler system clarinets.

I've been researching them (Michl) too. A good detective story!

But, truly, I'm fascinated by the instrument making that took place in this area. I'm deep into finding out more about it now.

Bill, I have a Kohlert (Graslitz) Oehler-system Bb clarinet, plays very nicely. So they certainly exist.
