 Markneukirchen and Kraslitz

What was going on there in the teens and early 1920s in Kraslitz? Has anyone done a dissertation or a private investigation into instrument manufacturing in Germany and the Czech Republic during the early 20th century? It seems to me they out-manufactured Paris.

A "click-trip" to Kraslitz on Google Earth reveals a sad town dominated by a large, somewhat frightening blocks-long building (Amati?) interspersed with gorgeous old architecture.
