I first remember reading Dan's articles on the basset horn back in 1968, in "The Instrumentalist" I think.
Have followed his career with great interest.
His last basset horn (Stephen Fox) is I understand now resident in the UK, paired up with an almost identical instrument.
As a 30 year IBM veteran he beat me by about 18 months.
A sad loss.

Dan Leeson had an amazing curiosity about so many things and was generous with his knowledge. Although he didn't know me, he kindly sent copies of his Mozart notturni basset horn/clarinet parts (it only existed in score at the time), including a transposition of the basset horn in G part. I always enjoyed his passionate posts and writings. He'll be missed!

I remember corresponding with him and discussing his novel, "The Mozart Forgeries." He was gracious, but , alas, did not produce a sequel.
He was a wealth of information about....as he called it: The Grand Partootie.
Sorely missed.

Sorry to learn that he's gone. I also enjoyed "The Mozart Forgeries," and thought that with some good marketing, it might have been more than a niche novel. I also loved his passion and well-stated arguments, and his belief in playing the C clarinet when it appeared that way in the score.

That's sad to hear. I had a chance to play with Dan a couple of times, and he was always very nice, and very interesting to talk with.

Sad to find this news. I first heard of Dan while I was studying with Rosario Mazzeo in the 1970s. Mazzeo was excited that Dan Leeson was moving to California, and recommended I look into what he might be doing musically in the Bay Area. I was delighted many years later to get to know Dan on the mailing list, and read his articles and books. Along the line I purchased a circa 1810 clarinet from him that he was representing for another clarinetist, the only time I met him in person. A very musical, intelligent, and funny man. RIP.
