Hello, I recently heard of a Oehler system clarinet, and I was wondering about it. I found a few pictures and it looks more like a glorified Oboe rather than a Clarinet. I try and look up information about it but as of yet, my efforts have been fruitless. I was wondering if I could get any information on them. They appear very interesting. Thank you for any imput anyone may be able to give me.
Thanks
Kyle

Hi Kyle
I have been looking up information about it too. You can find them in Sneezy if you do a search on "oehler", "german clarinets" or something related.
You can find them in www.ebay.de too, just do a search on "klarinette".
Theres a fingering guide at www.wfg.sneezy.org.
These are some manufacturers who produces them

Hi, KNY -
Almost all depend on trilling first finger LH.... so, it depends on whether I'm in a good humor or not :]
These are what I use when there's no way to avoid it. Maybe someone else has different or better ones, but these work for me....
The basic most frequently used:
T
X (tr~~~)
| X (side Eb key)
O
== (this represents middle joint)
*************************************************
Second, just as good:
T
X (tr~~~)
X
--- (banana key?) whatever you call that little one
O
==
*************************************************
Alternate, which works pretty well but F# is a little flat :
T
X (tr~~~)
O
X
==
**************************************************
Or, this one but F# is a little sharp :|
T
X
|| X (tr~~~ the side F key)
--- (that little banana key again)
O
==
**************************************************
These probably will work on most Alberts too.

A range is also produced by Yamaha in Japan. The photos in the catalogue are reminiscient of an oboe only in the more cluttered look of the keywork. I copy this from their catalogue:
"..... These clarinets are exactly like the traditional German clarinets in bodyi design, taper, fingerint, and most importantly, their dark, Germanic sound. The intonation and construction ........, though, are superior to anything that has ever been available before in an Oehler clarinet......"
Yamaha also make Oehler clarinets but with Boehm keywork. I quote again,
"Our German Boehm instruments permit clarinetists accustomed to Boehm fingering to obtain the traditionally Germanic Oehler sound without having to master a new fingering system. The .......models adhere perfectly to Oehler design in all respects except their Boehm fingering."

Thanks for the suggestion Ron!
But sadly speaking, the fingering

for F is too sharp for the Oehler. Its only suitable for the Austrian models if I'm not wrong. Talking about Yamaha. I was hoping to get their Reform Model one day (if I could save up the money in the first place). Does anyone has experience with them?

Kny -
I'm sure you're correct. I didn't *try* these before I posted.
T, OXO || may be too sharp for a real trill. I think though that on my horn it's 'passable' for a short one. As I mentioned, if at all possible I avoid that (Eb to F) trill at (almost) any cost :]]
I'll claim senility, a sprung spring or a flat pad or - ANYTHING to get out of that Eb to F trill.... whoooieee!
Sometimes, though, you know... *somebody* has to do it

I believe that Brymer in "Clarinet" discusses these clar fingering systems, likely Lawson also. I've tried playing on turn of the century Albert-Mullers, and experimented with fingerings, as I recall the best first-space F was thumb and first finger with the lower trill key. Keep trying, Don

Play the Eb with the fourth finger nof the left hand and thrill with the F AND Eb thrill keys simultaneously. Gives quite a clear F.
