All you composers out there, this story has the makings of a libretto or plot for an opera or at least a Broadway musical. Get working on that now! Just think what Mozart or Verdi would have done with this! Love's cold deceptions. The leading actor would be a clarinet virtuoso virtually erupting in juicy clarinet excerpts and solos. His betrayal by the significant other flutist could be signaled by wild virtuoso flute solos that obscure and outdo the clarinet passages. The possibilities for postmodernist deconstruction are limitless.

The good news is that he seems to be finding some decent work, he’s now the associate principal at Toronto Symphony Orchestra so it’s not all doom and gloom.

Eric was my classmate in LA — luckily he's doing great despite the circumstances!

Something about this story is piquing the interest of general news readers.
Yesterday it was the most-read story on the The National Post app:
http://nationalpost.com/pmn/news-pmn/canada-news-pmn/woman-must-pay-musician-ex-boyfriend-350k-for-sabotaging-coveted-opportunity
and the second most-read story on the Washington Post site:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/06/15/clarinetist-discovers-his-ex-girlfriend-faked-a-rejection-letter-from-his-dream-school/?utm_term=.ace03e1a83fc

Eric is an easy-going guy (he is a former student) who I imagine is getting a chuckle from all this.

Of course this is a sad story of a breakdown in a relationship.

However, I was sufficiently intrigued to dig out my SubjuncTV again, and try to access the channel that would tell me what WOULD have happened to Eric had his girlfriend not interfered in his intended study with Yehuda Gilad.

I suppose it’s not surprising that I was unsuccessful, given the distances and combinatorial possibilities involved. However, as on a previous occasion[1], there were some surprising discoveries to be made nearer to home. Amazingly, I was able to find out what would have happened had Gilad been born a few decades earlier, thereby affording both myself and a number of my colleagues the incredible opportunity of studying with him.

Well, modesty prohibits my telling you what dizzying heights we would have achieved, both musically and technically. It’s no exaggeration to say that the current clarinet world would have been transformed.

And, not only by our own efforts – in that scenario, Gilad himself would have been the leading star in the performance firmament!

Tony

The story is amazing but in my mind it also proves that people with exceptional talent can make it in any field as long as they study with competent teachers. Many great players in many fields haven't studied with "the best" in their fields but for sure, it never hurts. Is there always only one "Greatest" teacher of an instrument? I think not. When I studies with Leon Russianoff I considered him the best but there were many others that other people considered the best as well. I wonder which of the best was actually the best? I bet it's a matter of opinion.

This is something I was thinking about as well with this story. It was really very [expletive deleted] what happened to that kid. But you gotta admit that this is a special person who was NOT going to let it get him down, and through perseverance and passion still did what he needed to do to get the job done!

But yeah. I'm glad that this is being fixed as well as can be through the lawsuit. And the settlement is deserved.

The guy is fine. He's currently in the Toronto Symphony.

This story just says to me: Don't give your girlfriend your e-mail password.
