Martinu 4 madrigals cl part in Bb?
Author: Simon Aldrich

Hello everyone,

I am playing the Martinu Four Madrigals (for oboe, clarinet and bassoon) next year. The part on IMSLP is for C clarinet and the available parts currently in print appear to be for C clarinet as well.
Does anyone have the clarinet part for Bb clarinet, or know of the part being for clarinet in Bb or A?
My C clarinet is not as in tune as my Bb and I would prefer to play the part on Bb if possible, since the part is quite substantial at 14 pages.

Thanks,
Simon

Since you've got plenty of lead time this sounds like the perfect opportunity to master C transposition by sight. It really is a useful skill and tends to enhance one's musical social life.

Maybe you should Google the OP before making such a condescending recommendation..

There are some C clarinet parts that are risky to transpose by sight for a public performance, such as the stage band part in Wozzeck. I think the Martinu qualifies as one of these.

I have PhotoScore and Sibelius and could transpose it for you but it may take an hour or more. Email me.

It's a bit strange to Google the person asking rather than address the question at face value, no? My quick reply was meant to be helpful. Sorry that it might have been taken otherwise. At least it seems to have brought attention to a post that had not received any response.

Nellsonic,

Did you look at the C clarinet part on IMSLP?

I did and although I'm able to transpose on the fly very well I'd not want to do it with this chart in a public performance. Since it is C major and the transposition to D major with a lot of the part laying across the break and a number of accidentals are included, this would be a toughie.

Please see the attached which is the opening of the 4th madrigal. Many sections lay well and I was able to sightread a great deal of the piece up a step, but I can see that it would be very easy to make several unforced errors.

Why not get your C clarinet better in tune (or the combination of you and your C clarinet better in tune), and play it in C major?

Then you'd be able to play those other pieces for C clarinet – like the Schubert Offertorium, or the 'other' Rossini variations – with greater ease:-)

What are the Intellectual Property Rights issues with transposing a piece as "recent" (first published in 1951) as this?

All good points about the Martinu I'm sure. No, I haven't looked at it but I do like what little Martinu I know and will look it up sometime soon. I'm on a short vacation and am limiting myself to a few long-tones and a page of Kroepsch each day while I'm travelling.
