Lets say I win the lottery and offer $100.000 to make an OctoContraBass Clarinet.
Thoughts?

The why is because it would be awesome. Love to see a preliminary design drawing.
Certainly something not every Tom, Dick clarinet player would have.

One is apparently being made here in the UK. Not sure when it’ll be finished but I heard that the keys are being made at the moment.

There was an octocontrabass build years ago by the Leblanc company. It was not offered for sale but kept in the personal possession of Mr Leblanc himself. It played down to three octaves below the soprano clarinet.

I believe they also built three octocontraalto clarinets around the same time, but I have no idea what happened to them. Someone on the board may know something about them.

Peter Cigleris,

Do you have a source for this information? I had no idea someone was attempting to make another octocontrabass and I would love to learn more.

Hah - take that on an airline.

Do bends in the tube acoustically change the sound? Or does the waveform remain symmetric after passing through a bend?

Is this an Octo Contra Bass (at about 6:42). I saw this video the other day and was just gonna ask what type of clarinet was it.

Perhaps you could offer the money to Jochen Seggelke and ask him to make an Octocontrabass similar as this Contrabass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io7O7-T5NzE

Bennett, Cyrille Mercadier "only" has an octocontraalto in his collection, so there's no octocontrabass in those videos. But I know he has serviced and played the instrument at the museum at La Couture Boussey.

zhangray, that's an "ordinary" contrabass. It is Mr. Mercadier who is playing.

You could always commission Benedikt Eppelsheim to make an octocontrabass clarinet - they've made metal contrabass clarinets as well as other contrabass and subcontrabass reed instruments.

So if money is no object, I reckon they could do that.

I do, from the maker himself. Email me offline to continue the conversation.

With respect to lottery winnings (or other fortuitous financial gains) enabling the purchase or even the commissioning of one's "dream" instrument- perhaps many of us live our musical lives thinking we've missed something having to get by on a more limited budget. That's a bit sad whether true or false.

On the other hand, I wonder about those "lucky" few winners. How often does the longed-for instrument (or anything else in life) live up to the anticipation? Sometimes it does, many times not. Might be tough to predict in a particular case.

I'm satisfied with my clarinets, though with spare $$$$$$$ I might try a few alternatives. I'd probably go back to a real semi-concert grand piano, perhaps a late model C7 instead of always playing my Gigapiano (which is a C7 sample anyway). But then I'd return to my days of never being satisfied with tuning. Day after tuner visits, I'm already wistful. MIDI pianos cured that. Yes I could have the tuner out every day or 2- I don't think that would be satisfying either. I would like to have an old 1970 era Thomas "Celebrity" and a spare room to hold it. Maybe it would play as nicely as I remember- or not.
