Being new to the entire Smartphone craze, I finally got one to replace my trusted Flip Phone and joined the 21st century.
What is a good, free recommended tuning app, and a preferred metronome app for a basic Smartphone? There are many on the Google Play Store. Not sure which ones to choose.

I've been using PanoTuner Free for several years, I've found it to work well. I'm able to set for key of Bb so indicator shows "correct" notes. Minor issue is that sharp left/flat right seems backwards from what I expected, I've finally gotten accustomed to that.
(And I just had a "duuuuhhhh" moment when I realized I could have turned the phone upside down any time to fix the sharp/flat left/right issue.)

TuneLab Lite is a good free tuner. If you don't mind buying then check Tunable and Cleartune.

I agree with brycon. Tonal energy costs $3.99, but it is so useful. Worth every penny. Parents won't let me buy it, so I use my band director's iPad at school

That's OK Ray, the day will probably come when you'll get to tell your parents what's OK for them to buy- or at least offer advice about what is wise. I have 2 adult sons, and I know what I'm talking about.

Ray,
I'd happily pay 50 bucks for tonal energy. The recording function--having a recording device on your phone that allows you to play things back at half speed and check rhythm and pitch--is easily worth it. Can't believe it's only $4. I nag all my students into purchasing it (because they need to be recording everything they do).

Check your phone's intonation recognition versus a trusted source. I had a phone that was consistently flat (almost quarter tone!) no matter what app I used. I highly recommend making sure everything is correct using free apps as test fodder.

Do any of these apps go beyond indicating tuning on individual notes as they are being played? I mean- listening to the previous 10-60 sec of playing and showing the flat/sharp trend of ranges of notes? So the player can make an intelligent decision about whether or what to adjust? What I am describing is absolutely doable with today's technology- but it would require a combination of serious musicianship plus computer science. I'd pay $50 for it, bet you would, too.
(Edited to add- and it should be able to pick clarinet, or any other instrument, out of an ensemble. And perhaps it should give its verdict vs the other instruments playing as well as absolute pitch.)
I think whatever clarinet maker thinks their products have the best intonation should fund such an app and provide it free- along with instructions and videos how to use it to compare clarinet R vs clarinet Y vs clarinet B vs clarinet S. App could even have an "instrument comparison" function. It'll never happen.

On mine (not sure if it's the most updated version), I go to either the tuner, sound, or analysis screens and swipe right from the left side of the screen. It pulls out the recording tab.

Metronomics can be set to do the rhythm in the middle of the third movement of Contrasts, which a lot of the metronome apps can't.

My longtime favorite is Cleartune.
It allows you to transpose notes so you see written pitch for your instrument and has an easy-to-see, no clutter interface that also displays exact frequency.

I favor Cleartune, which seems to have the quickest recognition and the best damping of the indicator needle.
For those new to smartphone apps, a word about "free": more often than not that means there will be screen space devoted to ads and upgrade offers. Most of us would be happy paying a couple of bucks for a good ad-free metronome or tuner, and any review of a product cover that aspect.

I use Master Clarinet Tuner by Netigen on Android. It has separate tuning for instruments in Bflat, A and F. It seems to work well. It has unobtrusive ads, or you can pay a couple of bucks and get it ad-free.

TonalEnergy. Absolutely. People have already talked about the recording function, but another handy feature is that it also will tune pitches to where they belong in chords. If you change the equal temperament button on the top of the screen to just/pure temperament, go to the sound wheel, and double tap the note/key you want, you can tune notes to the harmonics of that key. Helps a lot when you know you are the 3rd or 5th of a chord and want to tune to the correct pitch, not just "in tune."
Also, to answer the question of tuning during recording playback, it does do that as well. A real-time tuning tracking will appear when you play back your audio. I personally use a different metronome app (because it offers more features being a dedicated metronome), but TonalEnergy is an amazing tuning and playback app. It went through an overhaul several months ago and is now even better than it was before.

A free one for Android which I like a lot is "Instrument tuner" (of the selectable instruments in it I use the "Chromatic Tuner"). Easy to read scale and the deviation is also shown as numbers. The general pitch level is adjustable. By the way, when using it as a piano tuner it picks up lower and higher notes than my previously used dedicated tuners didn't even know existed!
