 Regarding the Vandoren 5RV
Author: Ben Shaffer
Date:   2017-11-01 20:42

Well Ive picked up a couple of used VanDoren 5RV MP's on eBay.
One an 88 the other a Lyre.
These are the "442" not the Series 13.
To that end I'm anticipating they may be sharp when I play in the local Community Band.
Obviously I'll need to pull out some.
So which to pull out... the MP or the Barrel, and if you had to guess, how much would you think I would need to pull out?
One MM or so?
Keep in mind this would be stuff I would likely know had I had some lessons :)
Unfortunately just had group lessons in school, and not many of them at that :(
Could use a tuner, but would just like to keep things simple.
BTW I seem to be in tune when playing in the Band using my Vandoren m13
Series 13 .
Now before anyone mentions it I realize many will think the M13 might be the better MP to use, but I just got the 5RV's for something new to have :)

Profile 88 is a narrower beak shape (than a traditional Vandoren shape). Lyre (as in 5RV Lyre) is a different facing from the 5RV.

The "keep it simple" answer is that you pull out as much as you need to to be in tune. It depends on where your band's pitch level generally is.

I'd pull the barrel out, but if you're very sharp, you could pull both the barrel and the mouthpiece. But if you're that sharp, a longer barrel might be a better solution.

A tuner won't help you play in tune in band - you have to listen and adjust. On the fly.

If that's true then you'll have to learn how much extra length you need to add. Start at a millimeter and see if you're in tune or not. Then increase or decrease accordingly. But, if you're better in tune with the M13 than with either 5RV, the question remains why you'd switch.

Muncy Winds sells tuning rings (or spacers) that fit both barrel joints (top and bottom) ... the top tuning rings also fit the center joint of the clarinet. Adds stability and repeat-ability to how much you have to pull ...

How much you may need to pull depends on your reed, voicing/embouchure, instrument, barrel length and internal taper, temperature and how the ensemble tunes.

So, you might have to pull from zero (or needing a shorter barrel) to maybe as much as 3 mm or more (needing a longer barrel) ...

One ensemble I play in, has a bunch of tired old men like me ... the pitch center is about 438 (!!)

You just gotta check it out ... too many variables to guess ...
