I purchased my Buffet r13 in New York City in 1957.
I'm still playing it all these years later and it sounds great.
According to an early post it should be a Robert Carree polycylindrical model.
The serial number is 48745, .
Made in France is engraved below the buffet crampon cie info on both joints.
There is no letter before the serial number.
There are serial numbers on upper and lower joints.
This would indicate a Carree clarinet, but the A and g# keys share a post( 3 posts instead of 4)
It should have four posts.
Do I have a Carree early r13 or is this an oddity?

The "clarinet perfection" serial number list has this clarinet produced in 1954, with "official production" of the R-13 beginning in 1955. So you may have a pre -R13, or maybe an early R13. And bear in mind that this reference says serial numbers listed for these years "are approximate."

The model you are speaking of is generally just called an "R13" as the R stands for Robert Carree. It was also the only Bb pro model Buffet made at the time. Unfortunately your instrument is more likely a "pre-R13" and does not have exactly the same bore as a true R13, although it is still a good instrument.

The sound quality is excellent in all ranges , I really don't have
a "Legit" R13 to compare it to, but I have gotten a number of complements about my tone quality. I'm grateful to have an instrument with the dense wood available in those early days.

One way to tell if it is a possible early R13 is if the bridge key on the upper joint has the wings as opposed to a rectangular shape. I was told that Buffet never made a pre R13 with the wings on the upper joint bridge key.

In this transitional and experimental period, you really need to measure the bore to be at all sure. The "pre-R13" (which was always called R13 in the catalogue) had a bore that was close to cylindrical near 14.90 mm diameter in the upper joint, whereas the Carree R13 tapered substantially, from between 14.9 & 15.0 at the top of the upper joint, to around 14.70 at the bottom of that joint. That's a big enough difference that it's not hard to detect, although you still need an appropriate tool to do the measuring.
