What vintage clarinet(s) really surprised you on tone & how they played

I'm thinking more of the cheaper clarinets, stencils, etc, not so much the Buffets and Selmers, but let's hear about those too if you like.

I have a Pichard Artist circa 1960 made by Malerne, that restored beautifully and has some super even looking tight grained grenadilla. I put the tan/brown kangaroo pads on it from Prestini. They floated in so nicely and sealed perfectly. And the clarinet seems to play in tune and sounds great to my ear. Using a Henri Selmer S mouthpiece.

Similarly with a Selmer Sterling A clarinet from around 1955 (either a Malerne or maybe a Dolnet stencil) - it didn't look much, but it played like a dream once fully rebuilt. I regret selling it to be honest, but someone somewhere is hopefully enjoying playing it.

Including metal?

My H.N. White "Cleveland" instrument (very similar to a Silver King except with a one-piece body) is every bit as nice-sounding and well in tune as my later instruments, though the key work is just a bit clunky.

(No, people can't tell that it's metal from the sound.)

It was built in the middle '30s.

An old Malerne stencil with "Artcraft' stamped on it. What I found astonishing was how dense the wood was, It had real 'heft' with no trace of cracking. I assume it was from the 1930s. One of my past students had it. It played nicely even though the keywork had seen better days.

A lovely old Jerome Thibouville Lamy Bb dating from the 1890's. When I bought it from EBay it was in very poor condition, but it restored beautifully and has very even tuning with a sweet tone. I'm using a Selmer HS*. As is often the case with older instruments the wood is superb.

Selmer Signet Soloist. The sound is big. Tuning not the best.

the selmer series 9 were alot of fun to play and had a great sound..miss them alot..The Evette and Schaeffer wood clarinets from the 70s were better than many r13s.

I picked up an old Jean du Blay eflat on eBay five years ago. It came with a hard rubber barrel and bell. However the bell was smashed and in pieces. After a good soak in oil and an overhaul with leather pads it plays really well. A friend has borrowed it for a couple professional gigs. I paid $18.50 for it. A Leblanc Esprit barrel and bell fit and work fine.

I also got a really beat Rene Dumont Bb. Bob Bernardo graciously fixed it up gratis and I gave it to a friend's son. It played very respectable considering how beat up it looked. But maybe that was because of all that Bob did to it? Thanks again Bob!

IMHO Paul Gerard clarinets are very underrated instruments. These instruments were hand finished and were comparable to top of the line Buffets. Despite this these instruments sell for less than student models today.
