 B.Cl + Harmonizer?
Author: BflatNH

In some sessions I need a Contrabass Cl, but it is not available. Has anyone experimented with a Bass Clarinet and octave harmonizer to simulate (8vb) contra pitch and tone? I am guessing that the wave form is sampled (to keep the timbre) and stretched, or chopped at 1/f intervals and spaced to get the desired pitch. How well would it work? Thoughts?

I use a bass clarinet with a few effect pedals that include a harmonizer.

The main differences:
- You only have the lower range from the amplified sound, not the acoustic sound.
- The higher acoustic sound can still be heard if the amplified sound doesn't completely cover it.

Either of these differences might be a "problem" or not depending on the situation. I just use it only in situations where it's not a "problem".

I can't say that it is close to imitating a contrabass clarinet because I don't try to sound exactly like a contrabass clarinet. Contrabass clarinets have a pretty "trebley" tone compared with their range. I usually have a more bassy tone with this effect. You could use EQ to get the type of tone you want more or less but I'm not sure how close to a real contrabass it would be.
