 Clarinets in G
Author: Ed Lowry

I see a number of clarinets in the key of G advertised on Ebay.

Where are they used? What music is written for them?

I think they are used by a lot of people for klezmer

They are used for Turkish folk music.

I love this one:

Great playing! Very different sound than what most are familiar with. The mouthpiece and reed set-up is a big part of it.

The history of the clarinet in Turkey is a very interesting one. A real east meets west story with some surprising details.

Just though I'd mention this, in addition to the Albert system G clarinets there are also some Boehm system G clarinets being made. Folkmusic123.com actually has a plastic one for 800 EUR which is a bit over $900:

The one use I've found for my G clarinet (before I sold it a while back) was to play Chalumeau parts. It was also fun to improvise on, however my instrument was a "half Boehm" system and because of the simplified keywork some intervals were not possible. Fun to mess around with but not really something most clarinetists would find useful.

I tried one when I was in Turkey - very easy to play. The shop told me that everyone played with a 1 strength reed. I bought a couple, brought them back and they went mouldy in about a week! My teacher was horrified.

You must have very large hands. When I tried several a few years ago (in Istanbul) I could hardly cover the holes, and I've been a professional for several decades.

The No.1 reed worked surprisingly well on that set-up (I generally use 4's) but you are correct about the moldy reeds. After I played the horns I got ill and had to be on antibiotics for 10 days.

If you have a chance to listen to Ismail Lumanovsky play the G clarinet, he sounds great. I just heard him play a concert in Houston where he played both G and B-flat.
