I played a demo concert at a local middle school this morning and asked the teacher if she had a bass clarinet for me to show (I didn't want to lug my own along with a clarinet and alto sax) when I mentioned the larger instrument during the clarinet portion of the demonstration. She got out a Yamaha 221II. I was surprised to see that the bell tenon had O rings instead of cork. Then, when I later disassembled the instrument I realized that, although there was a cork on the middle tenon, it also had two O rings.
This is the only instance other than in pictures of Brad Behn's mouthpieces that I've seen O rings around tenons instead of cork. Since the middle joint had O rings and cork, was the cork installed at the factory or did someone add it later because the joint wasn't stable enough with only the O rings?

Yeah, both cork and O rings are standard on them.
