 Clarinet in d
Author: piki

Hi, I am looking into buying a D clarinet. Could anyone tell me which manufacturers sell them? Ideally, I would like to buy it used, but I haven't found one. And only companies I can find selling them are selmer and buffet. Any information would help. Thank you!

It seems the only new Boehm system D clarinet available by special order is the Buffet RC Prestige:

I've only seen one for sale used, an old Leblanc which went for $3000. I highly highly doubt you will ever find one that cheap, unless you want to check eBay and other sites amlost every day for the next few years.

You may want to consider finding an instrument to borrow if you need one. There is no good reason to spend $8000 on an instrument you will rarely ever use.

Also consider getting a period instrument. Some makers can make you a 5 key D clarinet for under $3000. This should be perfectly suitable for most music out there for the clarinet in D.

Mahler Symphony No.6

to name a few?

Or perhaps the OP wants it for Daphnis and Chloe, which while written for E-flat, is mostly a whole lot easier on the D.

Just a minor correction to jdbasspayer's posting above. You can place a 'standing' search on eBay; you'll then be notified by email if the item becomes available. There's no need to check daily. Search "d clarinet" -charm -jewelry -pendant
and be aware that a Noblet D is a model #, not a clarinet in D

While this feature is handy, it is not 100% reliable. Sometimes eBay won't notify you of a new item even if it matches your search criteria. For example, I almost missed out on getting my basset horn for $1200 because eBay didn't notify me. If I hadn't been searching at the time I would have missed it. If you want the best deals you have to check daily.

I'm appalled at the price Buffet RC Prestige D clarinets are commanding in the US. Just been having a good ol' moan on Facebook about this. They're near on DOUBLE the cost in the US compared to the UK.

For an additional $25 on top of the US price of the RC Prestige D clarinet (which stands at $8775 on the famous auction site that no-one dares mention), you can get yourself a brand new Prestige low C bass in the UK.

Luis Rossi also makes a clainet in D. You'd have to wait for him to make it but he makes terrific clarinets.

I guess the question is whether you can really get an RC Prestige D clarinet in the UK -- are they common and low priced? There aren't many on this side of the pond.

And what would be the price in the UK -- not mentioned in Chris P's note.

Here's the current price (from Howarth's site):

RC Prestige D Clarinet  BC 1407-2-0

Full retail price: £4,347.00
UK price excl. VAT £3,260.00
UK price incl. VAT £3,912.00

US price (no VAT) $4,447.13

The D clarinet in question is being sold for $8775 - a Prestige bass to low C is currently $8772.62 in the UK!
