Howdy all,

Here's the executive summary...

I bought what I am 91.3% sure was a student model Buffet clarinet for my son roughly 13 years ago. I remember doing the research, looking for a good deal on ebay, and spending around $250-$300 for it. He quit after a year and we loaned it to a friend's kid. Several years later it was returned.

Now here's the mystery. There is no way that I would have accepted the clarinet when I originally bought it if it wasn't clearly what I had ordered/paid for. Yet, the clarinet I'm looking at now has no branding. No make, no model. The only markings I can find are two matching engraved/stamped numbers (serial #'s I assume) and "Made in Germany", also engraved. The first serial # is at the bottom end of the top section and the second # is at the top of the lower section. "Made in Germany" is engraved/stamped just below the serial # on the lower section.

I don't think it's wood, but the finish appears "wood-like", in that it has very fine lines that look like wood grain. The case is just a cheap generic no-name case.

I checked the serial number (907147) on the Buffet website. No joy.

So this is my last shot. I'd like to be able to sell it but unless I can prove the make and model, I doubt anyone would by it for more than a few bucks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

>91.3%

I'm 95.8% certain it's a Buffet B12 :D

It could possibly be a B18 but those are not nearly as common so I doubt it. If you sell it as a B12 I don't think you'll get any trouble.

Would you please provide a pic of the upper joint?

I don't think that Schreiber made the B12, I thought that Schreiber ("Made in Germany") produced the E11 line of clarinets?

Also: from that one pic, that could be wood.

Not to get your hopes up!

Some searching here shows I'm wrong on one point: Schreiber did make the B12 clarinet line.

But what I'm reading says that the B12 is a "shiny" plastic clarinet.

If the serial numbers are engraved, the clarinet may be wood, which makes it an E11. If they are stamped, the clarinet is most likely plastic.

Looking at the photo it definately looks like plastic. Schreiber definitely made the B12 as they all say "Made in Germany". They also made them in both smooth and brushed "wood grain" finishes at different points in time.

Edit: it's late and I can't grammar

Definitely a B12.

Since the late '90s Schreiber had been printing the logos on them (instead of foil stamping them as they once did), so they wore off very easily.

Im pretty sure this is a Buffet nade by shaeffer in Germnay, you need to check the serial number of Sheaffer not Buffet, try perfect clarintet.com
if it is wood then it will be an Evette which is the old version of the E11

My Evette has perfect logos even now. It is annoying that a lot of them wear off completely. Some Buffets are embossed so it is possible to read the markings even after the print has worn off. With Yamaha not marking their barrels and some bells at all iy can make life complicated in the used market.
Hope the lessons have been learnt by now.
What is the cost of having them replaced?

Thanks all. While my faith in my sanity remains somewhat diminished, it's clear that I've not lost it altogether.

What I gather from the thread so far is that this is most likely a Buffet B12 made by Schreiber, and that the logos likely wore off or were removed for some reason.

The final challenge for me is to actually prove/demonstrate that. I'll continue digging around for a website that has the appropriate serial numbers to check mine against. So far though, lot's of dead ends.

toffeeman3 I could not come up with a good link for your suggestion.

Thanks Smokin,

Thats what I should have said!

I still think it is an Evette if it is wood but Evette markings tend to stay on so I am now thinking it must be ABS so then could be a B12

Cheers

It has the adjustable thumbrest and matt finish, so it's a B12 as plastic Evettes (and the B&H Regent II and early B12s) have a gloss finish and fixed thumbrest and much lower serial numbers.

The plastic Evette, B&H Regent II and Buffet B12 are all Schreiber clarinets and were made from ABS resin. The B12 is the model that has had the most changes made over time compared to its forerunners.

The B&H Regent II is different to the Evette before and the B12 after in it has a B&H Regent-style bell, but the barrel and main joints are identical besides the printed logos.

Evettes were available in both plastic and wood - the plastic one became the B12 and the wooden one became the E11.
