What is a prima donna? Anyone know any examples? How would someone be able to tell if they themselves were one?

I assume you're not asking about its literal meaning?

Karl, that's right, I don't mean a leading lady or lead female singer. I'm wondering more about temperamental indications.

Phillip, I'll write you privately. I'm not comfortable talking about the subject of personality traits here.

Read about Kathleen Battle. I performed with her once, and the things you will read are true...

Philip,
The meaning might be used differently in different geographic areas.
Around here, it basically means anyone who acts superior to those around them, or expects outlandishly out-of-normal attention, support, compensation, perks, or service. Furthermore, the person usually acts as if others have no other purpose than to be servants to the person in question.
Essentially, if you look down on others...you'd be well on your way to being a Prima Donna...add contempt or outlandish demands, and you'd probably have reached the status.
That's how the label is used around here anyway. Oh - and to answer your last question: "How would someone be able to tell if they themselves were one?" - The person wouldn't know they were a prima donna, or admit to it. See also: Narcissism.
