 Rough barell
Author: toffeeman3

I just purchesed a 1963 Evette and have overhauled it. I love it but I have a concern about the inside of the barell,it is quite rough. I dont want to go near sanding it but am curious why it is rough when all other internal paprts are like glass.

Second I am not really having much more pleasue from the feel tone of the instrument. I have to admit my B12 is better

Any ideas?

John,
See reply in the other thread. Your Evette is likely not from 1963, and was not made by Buffet. It was made by Shreiber for Buffet, and is likely not the same quality as the Evette's actually made by Buffet, which have serial numbers which begin with "D". I don't have any experience with Shreiber-made Evettes, but they don't seem to be coveted near as much as the D-series ones. When Buffet changed from Evette and Evette Schaeffer to B12, E11 and E13, if Buffet took that production in-house, you might expect it to be a better horn.

Try brushing it with a dry plastic test tube brush about the same diameter as the bore. I had a top joint that looked pretty rough, but when I brushed it it improved dramatically. I'm not sure what the rough part was. It might have been nothing more than fuzz from the swab. It LOOKED like the wood grain, but even if it was, there wasn't much to it. No observable dust that came out, but it looked much smoother.

I'd check the tone before doing anything to the barrel. If you have a similarly sized but shiny barrel you could do a comparison check. Remember the old saying, "Don't fix it if it ain't broke."

First make sure the intonation is ok. Ask someone who has a GREAT sound to try it on a compatible horn.
Rough grain inside a barrel is NOT a detriment to pitch or sound.
As a custom barrel maker, I was once "dinged" on this BB by someone who purchased a "rough bore" barrel from me. They had NO gripes about the pitch or sound, but made it seem like I produced inferior goods. Since then, I reject rough bores that arise in the workshop, and burnish all the smooth ones. It costs me time and money, and unfortunately it is a needless waste.

Disclaimer: I make and sell custom clarinet barrels.
