 Martin Fröst - chief conductor
Author: mankan

A surprising headliner in swedish media right now. Martin Fröst has signed a contract as chief conductor with Swedish chamber orchestra in Örebro, Sweden. It is a new step in his carreer.
"I have a very strong wish to put my effort, my focus, at one orchestra. I am very happy and humble facing this task and right now I am full of ideas”, he says to swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda.

Not sure if I am correct here. It looks like there are a lot of clarinet players who double or changed their career into conducting or composing.

For many: clarinet is a young man's game. Maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe, although not for Frost, a supplemental income that's more cerebral musicality than keeping up with performance virtuosity steers others.

Not that I am suggesting cause and effect here, but didn't I read here that Mr. Frost wasn't well (i.e. stuff that compromised his playing--or at least so he thought) not too long ago?

Amen Dave! I'm 47 and starting to figure out it really is young person's game. Doing 'Viktor's Tale' with my HS alma mater is week. I keep laughing with the director and telling him, "When did this all become work?" I hurt in places (hands?) that use to never bother me.

In a 2014 NY Times article, it was mentioned that Frost played the Mozart Concerto 37 times the previous year. While stopping short of saying he was getting bored of playing the same pieces, Frost said, "I’ve started to look back at my career from a point in the future. When I’m 85 what will I think I did with my life? I wouldn’t be proud that I’d done 1,200 Weber concertos. I need to shake myself around and be brave enough to develop new ideas.”

Frost is only in his 40s, still a young man. When Louis Cahuzac was 76, he recorded the Hindemith Concerto at the composer's invitation; at 79, Cahuzuc premiered the demanding Jean Rivier Concerto, and he only quit playing when serious injuries forced him to. Ron Odrich is still playing well at 85, and Al Gallodoro was doing gigs in his late 80s and early 90s. Frost has the talent and ambition to do what he wants, but chronological age is not a determinant.

I'm glad to hear that Frost's conducting direction is a choice he seems to have made, not that injury made for him.

I based my speculation here:

If Mr. Frost did have chronic Meniere's Disease, one of whose symptoms can be balance issues given its focus on the ear, I would think that such balance issues (which Mr. Frost may not have, let alone the illness) might impact conducting as well as playing.

I hope he is, and remains healthy.
