 30 second etudes?
Author: jonathan.wallaceadams

Hello, I have section leader interviews coming up at my school and on the audition sheet, it asks for a 30 second etude to show off our abilities on our instrument. Any ideas?

Just an aspiring student.

At quarter note = 120 and with a meter of 4-quarter, you'll get to play 15 bars in 30 seconds. A little faster a tempo or a meter with fewer beats per bar still wouldn't allow you nearly enough time to play anything much more than the opening statement of a complete melody.

What does your band director have in mind. There are certainly "etudes" - selections from the Rubank Advanced books or their equivalents that you could do. There are exercises of all kinds in Rubank, Klose, Kroepsch or others. If he or she wants real musical studies, you'll have to play a portion of something, and that could be any number of Rose studies.

You might ask the band director what kind of "etudes" would be appropriate or what other clarinetists have played in recent years. 30 seconds is too restrictive to do anything really involved musically.

Jonathan:
Back in the day, I was a typical, lazy teenager. I just played one of the Region/Area Rose Etudes (Texas TMEA) from the previous year.
As (part-time) teacher, I'd encourage you to take this opportunity learn something new and focus on an area of your technique and musicality that could use some improvement.

Play the first 19-20 measures of Rose Etude #9 of the Thirty-Two Etudes. It has everything: technical, melodic, articulation, phrasing, and dynamics while covering 2 1/2 octave of the clarinet.
