My 15+ year old prestige Buffet is in need of some TLC. She still plays beautifully, but needs to be professionally overhauled and looked over. (Wouldn't mind having some keys replated with silver, but not a deal breaker.)
Who do you guys recommended and what modifications can you suggest for improvements? Who's done great work for you?
The instrument has been fantastic and I'm willing to invest some money in her.

Out of curiosity, how much does an average repadding-overhaul cost in the US done by a top technician? Here in France, you could get one done for 350 euros-minimum.

Wes Rice has done pro overhauls on 2 R13's for me. His work is outstanding. His web site seems to be offline at the moment, but his contact info is email wesrice@usermail.com and phone 410-651-3040.

Guy Chadash (New York City) did a great restoration job on my R13 and the cost was very reasonable.

I got mine done at a local place (I don't think people send their horns in to there so I'm not sure how much good it would do you!). He did a complete overhaul of two instruments. Rehydration (both were sitting around for a long time unplayed), all new pads, including cork ones on the top joint, new corks, key adjustments, etc. It cost me $270 for each instrument (one Bb R13 and one random Eb from the 1930s that I bought recently).

I paid what I considered to be a reasonable amount. It was close to what two other techs quoted and I felt it was worth it because of what Guy said he could do. My R13 now plays much better than it did when it was new.
To be perfectly honest, I learned on a Yamaha clarinet and had a reasonably nice 650. I bought the R13 because everyone said it was the best - only to be disappointed with how inconsistent it played.
I shelved it, went back to the 650 for a while, then focused my attention on the saxophone. But last year I decided to pick up the clarinet again and knew I had to do something with that R13. I was working in NYC for a few weeks and learned about Guy's shop.
I called and he and I talked for almost an hour. It was a great conversation and I learned a lot about the newer clarinets from him. I sent the horn to him, he called a couple days later, told me what it would take to fix, and I got a wonderful horn back the following week.
