 New Yamaha horns
Author: Bob Bernardo
Date:   2017-02-03 08:31

Well a few days ago I suggested to keep an eye out on Yamaha, meaning that some new horns will probably come out within 2 weeks.

Great news! The older pro model SEV is replaced with the SEVR. I saw that coming. This will surely be a great selling horn as the SEV sold very well. I would think that you should try this and compare it next to the CSVR series and see which one fits you best.

The German CSG111 is replaced with the CSG111L. I was surprised with this move. This I did not see coming! I played the CSG111 in August and thought it was great. It has a 57mm barrel and it is a straight bore. I did feel it was a tad bright sounding for a German horn, perhaps they warmed it up?

I'll try to get over to Yamaha in the middle of March and test these out.

Needless to say, if anyone tests these new horns let us know what you think.

Before you buy a Buffet, Backun, or any instrument, check out the Yamaha's first. You will save a lot of money and get a really wonderful bold sounding horn. Not a wimpy dead horn which could cost thousands more.

It is true that Yamaha's horns are of great quality and with reasonable price. But it seems that the recent SE artist model is an exception. The price of this model is similar to Buffet's top model and it is much more expensive than the previous top model CSG series while probably the only cost difference of manufacturing is the gold plating posts.

Anxious to give the SEVR a whirl ... it's the big brother to the model 650 (which I like a lot). I doubt local music stores will stock this one, unless a well known local teacher recommends it ... my career has been tuned inside out int he last few days, and I won't have an opportunity to journey to the west coast unless I decide to pull the plug on work and just retire ...

If only they'd do something about their bass clarinets...

Yamaha speaker tube.

I realise this isn't relevant to the thread, but I need to generate a URL for this image to share with someone, so apologies to you all - I don't know any other way around this.

I have one of the new SEVRs and it is wonderful. It has a huge sound and is very different from the CSVR. Different not necessarily better. But I like it a lot. I'll have some recordings up with it soon.

Continuous product improvement ... fueled by new manufacturing technology, improved processes, improved design, and feedback from world class performers ... Yamaha rocks!

Where is the new Buffet R13-Mark II ??

Yamaha ain't scared of changes.

Just think if all we had in the computing world were IBM 3090 mainframes ...

Buffet has done many upgrades, improvements or design changes, but they have been as other models. There are SO many people who only want the R13 who would be upset to have the R13 changed. That is why despite the all the other models, whether it be RC, Festival, or many others, the R13 has continued to hang in there.

It is great that Yamaha continues to push to make improvements. They make beautiful instruments.

Yes ... Buffet has made unadvertised "improvements", even on the R13, I suspect ... subtle, but somewhat significant. Mostly in cleaning up the manufacturing process, I hope. But, I swear my recent greenline is atypical of older R13s ... I think it's "better" ... and I understand the marketing physiology of Buffet ... would still like to see a MK II though ... maybe it's here and we don't know it ...

Chris... I learned they have no plans to change the basses. No new models planned at this time. Hope you're doing well!

On the Yamaha pro basses thread someone said one is in the works being a brand new design and not a copy.( the 622 is based on the old Selmer 33). I like my 622 II as did Clark Fobes when he compared it to the Buffet 1193 and Selmer 67. Article is in September 2014 the clarinet. Clark felt it needs s longer neck as it tunes sharp( I have no problems with tuning). He tried a selmer neck from his selmer 33 which worked out great bringing pitch down. I agree with Clark that the Low D,C# and low C keys really need a redesign. I agree with Clark that it is very easy to play over octave break and has a great altissimo .
