 Legere reed strength
Author: brianshe

I recently bought a new legere signature reed (strength 3.25). Although the tone quality is satisfactory, There is a very loud "kazoo" sound. I know that my reed is too soft but according to the strength chart provided on the Legere website this reed should be fine. I use a V12 strength 3.5 normally. My questions are, do you think that the synthetic reed amplifies the kazoo sound compared to the cane? and what legere strength should I change too, I don't want to spend another 60-80 dollars just to try a couple of reeds.

Legere reeds are the best sounding synthetic reeds on the market. However they just can't compete too well with cane reeds. I honestly can't be sure exactly which strength you should use. There is no harm in asking a music store to try a few different sizes though, the worst they could do is say no.

There is no really GOOD way around investing heavily at the outset to find the right type of Legere cut and strength. Keep in mind though that you can do some exchanges directly through the Legere website. You fill out a form on line, they approve it, and email you a sheet with a code per reed, you send them the reed with the e-mail, they send you a replacement.

BUT.......

They only exchange ONCE per a purchase and they limit your total exchanges per year (or something like that).

I would HIGHLY recommend trying the German cut Legere 2 3/4 strength reed. They work fantastically on Boehm mouthpieces and they do run stronger. Personally I think that particular cut has the most cane like strength curve (if that makes any sense).

I personally never had any luck with the Signatures. The Quebec cut at equivalent strength to the Vandoren worked pretty well, but they don't make that cut anymore.

I "tested" Legere reed strengths via Amazon. No approval nor questions. Just click return and they pay the return shipping. I found their prices the best as well.

I played on 3.5 or 4 V12s. I think if there was such a thing as 3.75 in a V12 it would have suited me. Having said that, a 3.5 in a legere signature seemed the correct strength, but I too detected an element of kazooiness with that reed. However, that totally disappears for me with the European cut. Also, I find that the 4 Eoro is an almost perfect amount of resistance for me with my Vandoren M13 lyre. Something about the wider reed and shorter vamp really smooths out the sound. I find it to be superior to 99% of cane reeds. I think I would sound better perhaps with a super perfect cane reed, but as rare as that is, and for so short of a window in time, it's not worth it for me to mess with cane these days.

I use a Signature 3.75. When I used cane, I used Gonzalez FOF or Zonda 3.5-, or Canyes 4. I haven't used a V12 in many years.

I have never noticed the kazoo sound.

They can compete just fine with Cane reeds.

Ricardo doesn't sound at all like a kazoo - and he plays them 100% of the time.

But does he sound the same as he did on cane? I'm not so sure.

And in any case, as you yourself related in another thread, he's playing on a mouthpiece specifically optimized for those reeds by Brad Behn. He isn't pairing Euro Signatures with an off-the-shelf mouthpiece.
