 HELP! CANONBALL CLARINET!
Author: Natasha.Hallam

If you know may information about the pricing of the Canonball Veloce clarinet or the countess clarinet bell, please let me know!! My section leader left his bell on his music stand and I accidently hit the stand and the bell now has a crack in it. He is making me replace it and I am literally freaking out because I don't have any money and am afraid it will be expensive. You cannot find any information about the cost anywhere online.

Cannonball only sells through authorized dealers, not online. Here is their dealer inquiry form:

I’m sorry to hear you’re in this situation. If you don’t have any money, maybe you can get him to split the cost with you by pointing out his contributory negligence in leaving his bell on the stand.

Not my fight, but if he left his bell on his music stand, he should pay for the replacement. That was a dumb thing to do. You merely knocked into a music stand, which all of us have done at some point. At the very worst he should split it with you. Just my .02 cents.

My wording in my initial post was very restrained; I do agree with Marty above. It wasn’t your question, but if I were in your situation, I would offer to split the cost, and if he insisted I cover the entire cost, I would refuse. He could take me to small claims court if it’s important enough to him, and there he would only recover proportionally to his own fault—which, as Marty suggested, might mean he gets nothing since he is arguably 100% at fault. So, offering to split the cost is actually very generous. I am perplexed by your statement that he’s “making” you pay. He doesn’t have that power. He can only make a request.

Depending on the severity of the crack, a bell crack is usually not a huge deal. A repair should solve the problem, and would be much cheaper than a new bell I would think. A good repairperson could glue it if it's not catastrophic.

I'm finding it hard to imagine either how or why a clarinet bell would be on a music stand. Was the top levelled like a little table? Doesn't make sense. Unless there's unstated further incriminating circumstances, it doesn't sound like you are obligated to pay anything. If you want to help your section leader out, fine, but in that case maybe you should also pass on a little good advice about putting expensive instrument parts in precarious places in (probably) crowded situations.

The section leader never directly said that it was on the stand, but I assume that it was. I know that when I bumped the stand, his music fell off and so did his reed case. It is a mystery to me why someone would put a clarinet bell on their music stand to begin with.

Talk to your band director and to your parents.

Anyone who leaves their bell on a stand deserves whatever happens.

I'm actually a college student which makes the situation even harder... especially the money aspect of it.

Well, if you don't know, that yiu even bumped the bell off a music stand, why would you even consider that you owe him or her anything?

IMHO If your instrument is anywhere besides in you hands or in its case you're asking for trouble. Putting anything on a music stand besides music is just a bad idea.

If you end up having to replace it (and I urge you to fight it) buy a cheap Backun bell on "that auction site" and ask to keep the original bell so you can resell it and get some money back. That should be cheaper than trying to source a new Cannonball bell.

I've seen people leave their clarinet standing unsupported on the floor next to their chair during rehearsal breaks. A good example "seems to work" being vastly easier than "seems not to fail". One of those people was a young percussionist who was playing clarinet for the summer band season, a not very good clarinet owned by the school (which he had a ball playing.) I pointed out his folly to him, and ended up loaning him my clarinet stand. I never have occasion to use that stand myself, and follow what jdbassplayer said above.

I know that I would never leave my mouthpiece or anything else on a music stand. IF it is something one cares about, they need to take care to keep it safe. If it was not left safely, the person only has their own carelessness to blame. It is a tough lesson to learn.
