I've been out of concertband about 10 years but kept playing tenor sax and flute.Last nite I set up 2 reeds with my RM 128 I thought played well and in tune but because it was a short test and went to band the nite I now have itchy vocal chords and slightly swollen throat .I can only assume I used to hard a reed .What do you think there was a lot of resistance I didn't realize till after playing long tones running out of air.

How do you feel today? Are you getting sick? What brand of reeds are you using?

When I was younger, this sort of thing never happened to me, but now that I'm older, it's a different story. The problem is worse when I use a reed that's too hard or unbalanced. I find it helpful to take sips of water during a practice session or rehearsal, and chew sugarless gum afterward.

Ok. Try a new brand of reed.
When I read your post the first thing I thought was allergy. Do different brands use different types of cane? In which case that may solve things.
But then u said old reeds. They could have invisible mould or bacteria on them. Both of which could be very harmful to your health.
I have had violin students allergic to rosin. Had to try and find a few brands before they could play!

You could be having a reaction to the reeds. I didn't say anything for a reason. Rico uses pesticides. These pesticides don't disappear on the reeds. I would suggest trying a different brand of reeds. Mitchell Lurie reeds are made by Rico.
Maybe try Vandoren or the Steuer reeds, both are pesticide free. Let us know if you feel a difference.

While I tend to blame many problems on the reed, this is the time of year people tend to get sick. You may have just picked up a cold or virus that has nothing to do with your playing.
I highly recommend chicken soup. Hope you feel better soon.
