Well, boys and girls, the treasure chest is running low! It's been over 2 years since I last had a donation drive, and unfortunately it's time again.
Click on those red boxes at the top to be taken to the Donation Drive page. Any little bit you can spare during these holiday times will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for nearly two decades of patronage.

Thanks Mark and GBK for doing such an incredible job with this website. I've looked at others and, IMO, they pale horribly in comparison. Talented players from all of the globe contribute their valuable knowledge and expertise simply because they want to share what they have learned or experienced to help others. Even though I don't play anymore, I still come here often to learn. What a valuable resource woodwind.org has been and continues to be!

The way this "discussion board" is set up allows for a pretty free flow of ideas amongst a wide range of players.
It's great fun, highly informative and even great networking.

Mark,
How long will the donation drive be up this year? Through 1 Jan? Just for budgeting purposes .....
... and so I know how much time I have to convince my wife to allow me to throw that little extra in. (don't worry, she won't need TOO much time to convince...she understands how highly I regard this BBoard and the stuff I've learned here)

Only 28 donations so far - this seems disappointing 5 days into the drive. There's certainly no lack of interest in the website itself - there are many more than 28 folks posting here. I hope donations pick up. Thanks, Mark, for your time and effort in keeping this BB and the rest of woodwind.org online.

I'd like to get 200 donations out of the thousands of people who visit every month. This drive seems to be going especially slow, so somewhere past Jan 1 looks likely :-/
Thanks,
Mark C.

Just a guess, but I wonder whether the fact that the donation drive started just a couple of days before Thanksgiving followed by Black Friday in the USA may have led to the slow start, especially for snail-mail donations.

Just sent another, Mark, keep up the good work.

Dear Board members:
For the month of November, I counted 152 postings and the number of contributors is presently at 38.
Just over 2 years ago, I ran a small business and I had a banner ad on this BB. Since Mark's fees haven't changed in 2 1/2 years, I have a pretty fair idea of what he's making from advertising and it's not as much as you would think.
Several people have commented on what a wonderful job Mark is doing.
If the word donation doesn't entice you, how about giving Mark a "tip" for a job well done?

At least one donation failed to move the graph because the sender failed to double-check the address on the snail-mail envelope before sending it off. Duh. Sorry about that! Oh well -- reporting myself as cork-grease-for-brains at least gives me an excuse to move this thread up to the top again and remind people that this is a worthy cause....

Donation sent via Paypal. Hopefully enough to move the graph at least a little. Thanks, Mark.

The web site of a band I'm in occasionally gets donations through PayPal. They charge for their service. A direct donation by credit card gets more money to the intended recipient.

I wanted to urge the clarinet board community at large to strongly consider some financial support for this resource.
Just a few years ago I noticed a preponderance of posts about those of you scrambling for a free, public access copy of this or that piece of music and it made me realize that much of the internet community is based on free.
Why not?
If it's available and you don't take advantage of it you are a rube!!!
But lately I see more and more of the "free internet" becoming a charge service (and I don't mean advertising). If you want at "premium version" of your provider's service, you pay. If you want to watch ALL the TV shows you want on HULU when you want, you pay.
As a returning student (by that I mean an old guy going back for more education) I was introduced to "Lynda.com." This is an incredible resource for a wide spectrum of professionals. It is an internet entity that features full courses given not just by experts in their field but many are industry leaders themselves.
You better believe you PAY to get that service.
Here is a similar resource. There are a mix of us, but similarly we all pitch in to help each other out.
Everyone using this resource needs to seriously consider supporting it to whatever level they can (since there is no "set fee").

Hey George--
I didn't know that! Do you have a guess as to the amount Paypal takes off the principal amount? I'd certainly prefer my contributions to nonprofits NOT be watered down, it's little enough as it is.
thanks.

Please be aware that paying by credit card invokes a payment to a credit card processor - paypal and my own processor are reasonably competitive. Every time you use a credit card the merchant does not receive the actual amount charged.
If your PayPal is linked to a bank account or if you have any balance that covers your donation there are no fees.

Hey Mark,
There is an international vendor saying something similar about PayPal. Are you saying there are NO fees with PayPal?

If you pay via PayPal and you have a balance to cover the payment or it's linked to a bank account I see NO fees deducted.

Bump.
Was hoping I wouldn't have to bump the post, but this donation drive is sputtering ... if you've ever had a question answered, if this bboard has ever been as useful as even one lesson, please consider making a donation.
Happy holidays!

Yeah, I'll bump it, too. This is by far the best place on the Internet to get clarinet questions answered. I've learned a lot from expert answers to questions other people asked that I didn't even know I needed to ask!
Ahem. Excuse me as I interrupt these bloviations of my former stupid pet human for a moment. This is the ghost of Shadow Cat, now a Professor at the Feline Afterlife Acedemy. I most strongly object to the donation from said former pet human being credited not only to her -- but to me! By name! Appalling!
I did all I could to dissuade her from donating, as a matter of fact, even sending her a telepathic message to address the envelope incorrectly -- but Lelia never did listen to my urgent advice about the evils of the Screech-Stick demons, still plotting with the vile Hoover Devil to let the Garbage Truck into your homes! No doubt these days, she comes under the baleful influence of one of my former pupils, who foolishly dropped out of my Afterlife Academy class before being reincarnated as that apostate, sinister Screech-Stick-lover Jane Feline. You have been warned.

Mark, remind us again how many people participate in this BB? Subtract 89 from it and you have the number who participate without making any financial contribution to the board's maintenance.
Mark shouldn't have to beg for this help.

Thousands of different people read the bboard every month. Of course not all post.
It was a pleasure a few weeks back when one of our members gave me an unexpected call to tell me how much they appreciated the bboard. Makes it worthwhile.
Sitting at Vero Beach, sipping an iced tea, watching the waves today.
Yours truly,

Just think of all the money saved by regular BBoard readers who are able to research equipment and obtain valuable buying advice here--thus avoiding costly mistakes.

Giving this a little bump.
This has been a great resource for clarinetists at all levels for years. That pesky counter is not moving fast enough compared to all the activity here!

Thank you, Mark. I wish I could offer more, but current conditions are limiting. I am a retired high school teacher with a disabled wife and I am working part time as a substitute teacher to help make ends meet. To add insult to injury, we lost our house in the Butte Fire in California (the most recent figure I have heard is 1,500 homes damaged or destroyed). With essentially nothing but my clarinets, repair tools, and lap top I knew I still had a lifeline to the world. My wife agreed that, as much as I follow the BB, we were obligated to give what we can. If, at this point, I can afford to donate something I believe everyone who uses the BB can afford to do the same.
If this statement can be of use to you to help stimulate donations, feel free to use it in any way you wish.

Can I just say that the donation board, i assumed was a banner add for something. And promptly ignored it. So maybe we need to keep this post near the top so it gets seen.
I take my hat off to the post above.
Maybe making the banner more prominent or saying something like "help us keep the website going with your donation" or something like that, just so it is more clear?

I have to agree with Sarah. Bit more prominent (or less modest) advertising might help.
From other newsgroups / fora I pitch in, there's some "forum contributor 2016" or something thereabouts under one's handle, or, in this example, in lieu of the (mostly useless or sometimes misleading) IP/DNS address in parentheses after the user name.
It's not about chest-banging oneself or shaming the others, but rather to create an awareness that certain things cannot be free indefinitely. I understand this is a sensitive topic, though, and it's completely up to who runs a forum to do such things.
