 Olivier Patey's clarinet
Author: RLarm

I just saw a very impressive YouTube video of Olivier Patey playing the opening solo in Rhapsody in Blue. What caught my eye immediately were the extra keys on his horn: F resonance key AND a low E resonance on his bell. I thought he joined the Royal Concertgebouw playing Buffets. Was this a Buffet that Olivier had special work done on it or is it a different brand clarinet? On an older YouTube posting, Raphael Severe (he was playing Buffet at the time) had a low F and low E resonance. He told me that he asked Buffet to add these to his horn and they did. If we were to ask for these additions would Buffet even do it and if so, what would the additional cost be?

I do not think the clarinet you see is a Leitner & Kraus which Jacques Merteens was using before he retired.

Olivier Patey plays Toscas with the extra vents as you noticed. If you are on facebook, you can see a recent picture of his instruments on the "Clarinetists Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam" page.
I think he plays a VD B40 mouthpiece.

Do you know how much Buffet charges if you want a low E resonance key added to the bell?

In the US, they won't add it. This is part of the reason Shifrin left Buffet for Yamaha.

You can have it added by Tomoji Hirakata in NYC. He did a gorgeous job on Pascual Fortezza's green line Toscas.

Another person who does amazing mods is Levi Tracy at RDG in LA.

Both Tosca and Divine have the low E correction option (But in my opinion, it looks quite ugly). You can ask any dealer to order it from Buffet but it is almost impossible to add the mechanism to your current instrument except you are a well known clarinetist.
