 Testing Out Clarinets?
Author: Pmardy

Hi,

I'm sure this has probably been asked a few times but, I am currently out in the market to buy a new professional clarinet. I was wondering if there was a way I could get a company to just ship me a few different types of clarinets like, Buffet,Selmer,Leblanc,Rossi, and Patricola.

Also, I'm seeing a lot of "C#/G# articulated keys" what exactly does that mean?

Thank you in advance !

Shipping is expensive, especially with insurance. I'm sure you could get several horns from woodwind/brasswind, but you'll have to pay for them up front, and absorb the shipping cost on the ones you don't buy. How far to NYC? Buffet and Yamaha both have showrooms in Manhattan (I think), and Fred Weiner stocks as many different brands as anyone.

I believe I got my last new Buffet from Fred Weiner, or Poppy's Music (?). Think they are in Brooklyn or L.I.--maybe the same place. They had 6 Buffets to try out.

The articulated key allows you to trill (low register) b to c# by just using the key (keeping the C hole down). Same in upper register--you also can go from Bb to C# (low, F-G# high) same way, or using the alt. B/F# fingering.

I'm about 45 mins away from the city so i guess that's my best bet!

Thanks!

Weiner is in Mineola. How much easier could it be?
I'd suggest trying there before even the short trip to NYC.

Weiner isn't too far from me. You saved me a trip to the city!

Poppy's Music is simply the name on the storefront, and where Weiner Music credits sales on their books that occur with walk in customers. Internet sales are part of the Weiner Music side of the business.

Prices, at least for accessories, (shipping on the internet side of the business not considered here) have not always, in my experience, been the exact same--but close--(even for the same exact accessory) between the two businesses--both I believe under the Weiner financial umbrella.

That said, I consider them very reputable, competitively priced, and well stocked. I'm independent of them, but have been been a customer for nearly 40 years. If it's instruments you seek, coordinate with their Mark Kasten, who also heads up their Repair Department, and is extremely proficient at same.

I would also recommend Lisa's Clarinet Shop. While basically stationed in Illinois, I think she has a branch store in the NYC area. Lisa--who is personally, a fine clarinetist--makes regular visits to the Buffet facility in Florida where she selects only the finest clarinets for her stores. IMHO, you can do no better than a clarinet from Lisa's store. Yes, I am a satisfied customer.........

Contact Lisa Canning on Facebook or through her shop Lisa's clarinet shop. She is amazing and if you catch her at the right time, she'll be with buffet in France hand selecting instruments. She hand selected my A clarinet and it matches my b flat perfectly and she is reasonable. If it would happen to not work with her, find someone who specializes in clarinets and has a shop. Go to the shop, it is very very very beneficial. You can learn more, and have a professional opinion on the sound you first produce.
