 Scratched bore

Hello!

A few days ago, I got my swab stuck in my Buffet E11 clarinet. I gave it to my father to see if he could try to fix it and left with him. Before I realized it, he was holding it over the stove to melt the swab out. It left a clumpy mess in the bore, which he removed by jabbing a chopstick and thin scissors repeatedly. I now have a clarinet with melted residue and numerous scratches in the bore, and I am wondering whether it is worth the trouble to clean it up to see if I can still play on it. (Don't worry I still have my main R13 clarinet, would never let anything happen to that one).

TLDR: I have a bore with a lot of scratches in it, and there are even some gouges. Is the clarinet worth cleaning up and playing?

Try it. Nothing to lose, lots of bores are somewhat rough to begin with. It may even play better, you never know.

Interior scratches make surprisingly little difference. One of my best barrels has a huge gouge in the bore.

Now get a swab with a tail at the end that lets you pull it out backward if it gets jammed, such as the Gigliotti swab http://www.riamart.com/product/gigliotti-no-jam-silk-clarinet-swab-3064275.html. The Lomax swab also has a tail http://www.lomaxclassic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=207. If you can't find one, sew a flat shoelace to the bottom end.

I also have a long, straight hemostat http://www.amazon.com/SE-680FS-Locking-Straight-Stainless/dp/B000UHGXDG/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1430277282&sr=1-6&keywords=straight+hemostat that I use to grab a swab and pull it out

The worst possible thing to try is to come at it from the top.

Good idea on the forceps/hemostat. Harbor Freight also sells them.

They also are very handy for pulling weeks growing next to a cactus.

Thanks for all the advice!

Now I just need to find a way to clean out all the torn up swab pieces in the clarinet.
