 purchasing reeds in NYC
Author: qualitycontrol

I'm going to be in NYC this weekend and figure that the selection and price of reeds might be nicer than where I am up in Montreal. I was wondering if anyone out there could suggest stores to look up that would offer the new V21 reeds and that might have any exotic offerings (Morre, Leuthner, AW, etc...).

Searching only came up with old threads that listed vintage horn shops and repair shops, I couldn't find anything that suggested a good place for reeds.

I'll be around for a very short period of time, I'll only really have time on Saturday to venture out and I'll be around Bushwick and Greenwich Village, but anywhere in Manhattan or in western/central Brooklyn should be easy enough to reach.

Thanks,

Paul

You'll laugh.

With all going on there music related, you'd think it a great place to buy product. As a young player W 48th St was once a mecca for woodwind dealers.

Truth be told, as a native NYer here's what I'd do.

Go to Weiner music on the internet. They're closed on the weekends and too far out on Long Island to meet your travel parameters.

They have very extensive stock.

Order, or better, have those you're staying with (assuming its friends/family) order what you want and have it shipped tomorrow to them. It shouldn't take more than a day or two from Mineola, L.I., where Weiner is, to NYC. Pick it up when you visit them. This way you can save on monetary conversion rates and international shipping costs.

There's always Sam Ash, with its flagship store in Manhattan. I don't think they'll have Weiner's reed variety. I know Weiner has V21's.

Well, Sam Ash might not be a complete waste of time. As a supporter of brick and mortar stores, I go there when I need reeds and/or musical supplies rather than mail-order. Can't say for sure what their selection of V21s might be, but you should probably call ahead anyway, and they're a 10-minute subway ride from the Village. If Roberto's is open on Saturdays they might have them too, but I wouldn't go out of my way for Roberto's unless you want to see an old-fashioned repair bay with saxophones on display and a nice selection of mostly sax accessories. It's remotely possible that Rayburn Music, up by Lincoln Center, has them too--but again, I'd say call ahead first.

Last time I was at Sam Ash, they still had a decent selection of music out too, in bins, in case you wanted to browse clarinet or flute music. With the closing of Frank Music, I don't know of another store in NYC where you can actually handle music anymore.

More exotic reeds than V21s, though, no. Those days, sad to say, are gone in NYC, as is the legendary reputation of 48th Street as a music hub.

Sorry the news isn't better!

I don't know that Doug or I made this clear.

Sam Ash is now on 34th Street in Manhattan between 8th and 9th Aves. They do not have a 48th St presence anymore.

Innoledy. My new favorite place in all of NYC...they've got everything, and their prices are amazing. http://www.innoledy.com
