Anyone still playing the Lyrique 576?
Author: jdbassplayer

Hello all,
Recently I've seen a lot of people who have given up their Ridenour Lyrique 576 clarinets in favor of the newer Ridenour Libertas clarinet. I've heard people say that the Libertas clarinet is "simply better" among other things. Is there anybody out there who still plays the 576 exclusively or has everybody pretty much moved on to the Libertas. Also are there any qualities of the 576 that aren't present on the Libertas? All opinions are appricated.

Different acoustics between the two clarinets. Comparing McIntosh Apples and Granny Smith Apples. And yes, I think Tom still sells a bunch of 576s ... What else is there for under a grand that is better?

I own and play a Lyrique Libertas and have borrowed and played the RCP-576BC. I also own a Lyrique Speranza that is acoustically similar to the 576.

I will be buying a real 576 later this year ... this clarinet is still wonderful and is a steal.

You need one each of Ridenour's clarinets, for different styles of music ... and I think adding a Buffet, Backun, Yamaha and Selmer or two might be good items in your arsenal, if you have the dollars.

Tom

I still have the Lyrique RCP-576 as my principle Bb Clarinet. No problems with it.

I just recently bought a 576bc and quite like it. Granted, I can't afford the Libertas right now, but the 576 is a wonderful instrument in it's own right, at a very reasonable price point.

I still use my 576BC and haven't been tempted to consider the Libertas.

For all the effort and expense I went through getting my mouthpiece/ligature/reed setup dialed in for the 576BC...I plan on sticking with it 'til it's worn out! Why mess up a good thing?

If clarinet playing lasts another 1000 years, someone will still be playing a 576BC.

I like my 576BC, but have, for now, returned to my old Leblanc Classic. The 576 has the better intonation, but the Leblanc keywork suits me better and I prefer the resistance. As a sax player I expected to like the ergonomic register key, but much prefer the standard clarinet design.

Next month, who knows?

Thanks for the great info on this site. As a true confession, I am a trumpet player trying to learn more about clarinets and their traits to help my teenage son (8th grade). He has an old Bundy (His mom's) and is due for an upgrade. I reviewed the Lyrique 576bc and am sold on the ebonite concept (also an engineer so the design aspects really get me interested - yes sad, but true), but was wondering which would be better, the Speranza ($595+) or the Lyrique576bc($960+)? I want an instrument that I can buy once that will last him until the end of high school and possibly into college if he joins a band there. He plays in concert band and will also be in marching band. He's not going pro, but I bought a high quality Bach trumpet in high school and still use it in my 40's - great instrument and well worth the extra $. Also if there are alternatives to the rubber clarinets that you recommend, all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe someone played it 576 B.C.?

I have a 576be. This model has a left hand Ab/Eb key. After modifying the left pinky keywork, I'm quite happy with the instrument. For me, it plays better than my pre-R13.

I'm tempted to buy another 576 or Libertas (so I have a similar backup) and sell my Buffet.

I am an engineer who recently replaced an old but good Bundy with a Lyrique. I did not test the Libertas because of the difference in price and my budget. I think you could not possibly go wrong with a Lyrique. Once he gets to college, then his professor will have opinions on clarinets, but before then this will be a very fine instrument that will suit well. So...just get one for a play test and see what ensues. It is going to blow the Bundy out of the water in a few ways.

Just got my Speranza from Tom (and Ted) which they were listing on the auction site. I'm very favorably impressed, and initially see no keywork or other issues. The price was terrific ... especially being able to make my own "best offer". There are adjustment screws on the bottom of the crows foot -- something I'd never seen before, and which don't exist on my Ridenour C. Don't know whether Tom has them on the 576 or Libertas model.

All of which is to say, if you're looking for a bargain, and who isn't, the Speranza will fit the bill for many years, and (a) save you a bundle when compared to an R-13 or similar horn; and (b) save a few hundred off of the 576 Ridenour, all the while providing your child with a terrific instrument.

And I don't work for Tom either.
