Tinnitus is normally associated with hearing loss or medical conditions. If you have it you should go see an ENT doc. If it comes and goes you should go see an ENT doc. If it is associated with a sudden hearing loss you should GO SEE AN ENT DOC.
I've had it in my right ear for years, sounds like Niagara Falls. However, I'm severely deaf in that ear. I get it in my left ear when my hearing goes down the tubes, in that ear it's a 1000 hz tone that pulses with my heart beat. They give me steroid shots through the ear drum and it goes away.

I occasionally get tinnitus in my right ear after I take certain anti-inflammatory drugs. It starts almost immediately I take the first tablet and perseveres for about 3 weeks after I stop taking them. I've recently found an anti-inflammatory that doesn't have this effect so it shouldn't trouble me in the future.

My wife, a former nurse, used to say that you had satisfied your maximum dosage of aspirin (an anti-inflammatory) when your ears started ringing ...

I agree with bill28099's comments regarding tinnitus. As we lose high-frequency hearing (with age), the ringing occurs at a frequency similar to the one being lost.
On a personal note, I have noticed that at times, mine indeed worsens at community band practice (where, unfortunately, I sit in front of the trombones). Some people get relief with hearing protection devices; they didn't help me a lot, but fortunately my tinnitus is minimal.
