Hi all. Today's the day I'm taking care of my bass clarinet, and the inside of the neck seems rather grimy; what's the best way to clean the bore of the bass clarinet neck?

Not sure about getting built up gunk out of there (I'd assume there would be something that would be good to soak it in to get the gunk off without hurting the neck) but once it's clean, swabbing it after playing will keep it that way.

rubbing alcohol works - use one of those cotton alcohol wipes you can get a pharmacys.

If what yo uwant to clean is inside and similar to the type of white dirt that mouthpeices have, vinegar is usually the best for this. You can use rubber plugs and fill it for about 15-30 minutes. It won't damage anything. That will remove and soften the build up so you can then wash with soap and water, or just water if that's enough to remove it.
Soap and water alone might clean everything too.
If you do this, or get water and/or soap on the neck, make sure to remove the register key first, if there is one. Otherwise you can get water/soap/vinegar inside the hinge tube and the screw can rust.
For greasy and/or oily dirt, lighter fluid or alcohol are excellent. Depending on the specific type of dirt, one or the other might work much better. I prefer to use alcohol when lighter fluid isn't needed because it's not as bad on your fingers.

Whenever I play my BC, as soon as possible I wash the neck, mouthpiece, and reed in lukewarm, soapy water (with the dishes). I rinse everything and air dry before storing away in the case. I make sure not to overheat the hard rubber mouthpiece.

Vinegar or vinegar diluted with water and detergent. Scrub it out and rinse it well. Don't leave it in vinegar overnight.

Good suggestions above. It could be a good idea to take the pad key off before soaking it though. Once it's cleaned do what I did for over 50 years of professional playing. My neck is in two pieces, I separate them and using my index finger I push a soft cloth, like an old hanky, and clean each half from both sides but inserting it and moving my finger around. I've used the same bass for about 48 years, never had to soak it because I kept it cleaned. If it's only a one piece neck try to get a swab through it when you stop playing.
