I recently got an old metal clarinet found in Iowa City. I'm hoping someone could tell me what's best for cleaning metal clarinets? Keeping the pads intact isn't really an issue, as they are all deteriorating or gone already. Just looking to clean it up a little! Thanks!

Is it silver plated? Use silver polish and a lot of cotton rags, then wash it all of thoroughly after it's all polished. If you can remove the springs, then do that to save your fingers getting scratched or stabbed by them.

and if it isn't silver plated (chances are it isn't), then Brasso, Nev'r Dull or similar polish cotton do a good job. Alternatively, some kitchen chrome polishing cream like Cif and a toothbrush will get rid of most of the gunk.
Thoroughly blow off all rinsing water off the post holes and dry the instrument with a hair dryer to prevent rust.
(needless to say, you have to disassemble the instrument first)
Good luck, and post some before/after pictures, will you?
