and if it isn't silver plated (chances are it isn't), then Brasso, Nev'r Dull or similar polish cotton do a good job. Alternatively, some kitchen chrome polishing cream like Cif and a toothbrush will get rid of most of the gunk.
Thoroughly blow off all rinsing water off the post holes and dry the instrument with a hair dryer to prevent rust.
(needless to say, you have to disassemble the instrument first)
