Does anyone know how to read German notation? I'm taking German, and I think that would be neat to know. Thanks!

Hi, Contragirl -
1. German HTML-specials:
& = &
ß = ß
Ä = Ä
ü = ü

2.
usual time signatures (gebräuchliche Taktangaben):
alla breve, Vier-Viertel-Takt, Drei-Viertel-Takt, Sechs-Achtel-Takt, Drei-Achtel-Takt, Zwei-Viertel-Takt
(written with '-' to make it more easy readable)

Duole, Triole, Quartole, Quintole, Sextole, Septole

ff - pp usually read italian as "fortissimo", "pianissimo"

erste Volte or erste Klammer (vor dem Wiederholungszeichen / ahead the repeat sign)
zweite Volte or zweiter Klammer (nach dem W.)

Die Tonstufen werden meist auch / are usually called 'Intervalle' [sächlich, plural) genannt:
Prime (auch/also Prim), Sekunde (Sekund), Terz, Quarte (Quart), Quinte (Quint), Sexte (Sext), Septime (Septim), Oktave, None, Dezime (Dezim), Undezime (Undezim), Duodezime (Duodezim) [very important for clarinetists!]
g - h = große Terz
g - b = kleine Terz
g - his = übermäßige Terz
g - heses = verminderte Terz
e - h = reine Quinte
f - h = übermäßige Quarte, auch Tritonus genannt (also called)

flat - um e-n halben Ton erniedrigt - usually called (das) Be
sharp - zu hoch - usually called (das) Kreuz
natural - das Auflosungszeichen
also: das Doppelbe (double flat) and das Doppelkreuz (double sharp)

"Der Notenkopf des eingetrichenen C, das auch Schlüssel-C ganannt wird (vom Schlüsselloch am Klavier her) liegt auf der ersten Hilfslinie unter dem System."

3.
And for the instruments do not forget: die Blattschnur (the shoestring ligature) and die Kapsel (the cap),
Kontrabaßklarinette, Kontraltklarinette und Bassetthorn.

Arnold (der Bassethornist)

natural - das Auflösungszeichen (I just forgot the two spots)

"Der Notenkopf des eingetrichenen C, das auch Schlüssel-C ganannt wird (vom Schlüsselloch am Klavier her) liegt beim Violinschlüssel auf der ersten Hilfslinie unter dem System."

Bitteschön!

usually written in one word (no space)

By the way, there is a change of the spelling rules in Germany (Austria and Switzerland). The little pupils allready started to learn the new spelling. Thus you may sometimes become confused a little.

(and don't foerget the ';' at this board)
