Do you guys ALWAYS half hole? Do you sag your embouchure? I am interested in buying one for I love the tone of old Selmers but I don't know how can deal with it. Thanks guys!

Funny, I never could figure out how R13 players dealt with that horribly flat chalumeau. ;)

My CTs play spot-on down there--no embouchure adjustment needed. Far better in tune than any polycylindrical small bore.

(Having said that, if it's a problem for you, you might try a vintage mouthpiece, designed for the CT bore--an old HS* Oval works nicely. Don't know if that will help you, but might be worth a try).

Among other clarinets I have a Leblanc Dynamic 2 which has more or less the same bore design as CTs (15mm, cylindrical). It's a wonderful clarinet regarding sound quality and evenness, however the chalumeau a and b natural are a bit sharp. I pull a bit from the lower section or put a 1/2 mm tuning ring between the joints. However I plan to fill those two tone holes a bit. I have already experimented with duck tape and it worked well without the tuning ring.

My Leblanc LLs (14.8mm cylindrical) also tend to sharpness on chalumeau a and b but especially in pianissimo, However the twelths above e and f# are spot on so filling the toneholes is likely to make these noticably flat.
I think it much easier to lip down the chalumeau than lip up the clarion and if there is an especially important pp part using chalumeau I tend to quickly pull out the barrel for a few bars.

What length barrels are you using on your CTs?

I tend to use 67mm across the board.

64mm barrel works good on my CT, with an old Woodwind K9 mouthpiece refaced for the CT by Vytas.

I play with an aftermarket 66mm barrel on my CT and it plays very well in tune in all registers, excepting in the throat tones. Because I'm using an aftermarket barrel with a smaller bore diameter it seems to muck those notes up and I have to lip them down a bit and have had to vent them lower, making them a bit hissy. At loud volumes it's ok, but open G and A are especially sharp in low volumes.

The stock 64mm barrel for me played sharp all around and I had to pull it out a good distance to get it playing well, more than 3mm I'd say, which was very annoying. Switched to a longer barrel to keep things more consistent but I'm still keeping an eye out for a CT barrel that matches bore a bit better in 66mm. Other than keeping my eyes peeled to eBay does anyone know where I could get one?

Mark--

There are a couple of recording projects in my near future that I hope will pan out. If you follow my blog (link below), you'll know when they go public--very cool to have you check them out.

Caveat: my comment above is a bit tongue in cheek (though it's true). I'm a jazz player and my style of embouchure and blowing is different than most American classical players. If I played with an 'American classical' embouchure and concept, my low chalumeau would probably react as yours does.

Last night I played a gig using two different CTs and an old Fritz Wurlitzer R-B (the Wurlitzer is great for Jimmie Noone numbers). Talk about repurposing!
