Tuning App on a Smart phone
Author: muppie

Hi, I have an android phone and have been using it as a metronome and occasionally as a tuner. I am wondering what metronome / tuning app you folks are using / recommending? Is the phone hardware + tuning app accurate enough?

If not, what stand alone tuner / metronome would you recommend? Hoping for something does both and with some fancier beats for the metronome e.g. for 1/8th note, triple, etc.

Me and my band directors use the Tonal Energy Tuner. It's the best in my opinion but i'm not sure if it's for android.

I use Strobe Tuner. For android. Very sensitive to slight changes in pitch.

I have a tuner app on my phone that seems to work ok in a pinch, but the Korg TM-50 is really what I prefer.

It has a good tuner with playback of any note at many pitches. You also can calibrate it, useful for me because I need to tune to 440 and 442 depending on with whom I'm playing.

The metronome has many beat divisions and also has a click input for finding your beat quickly.

I use ClearTune on both my Android phone and my iPad.

The calibration and temperament functionality is quite useful!

It seems to have been discussed in the past:

On the android:

I use gStrings app as a tuner, because it's free. I tried it against my keyboard, and it's pretty much spot on. So at least gStrings is in agreement with my keyboard.

I will create a youtube video soon to compare my two clarinets.

As for metronome, I downloaded an app a while ago called Practice Music. It is very basic but works well. This app is no longer available it seems.

I have also used "Soundcorset Metronome" (Free). It seems to work fine for me and it has the divisions feature too. It seems a bit better than Practice Music but they both do the job. I am just curious what other people have used and found to be good.
