I need some advice on mouthpieces.
I used to play on a 5RV and I loved the way it sounded but the mouthpiece doesn't feel right.
I've been playing on a CL5 for a year or so and I love the way it feels and articulates but it's a little too bright in tone for my taste.
Would anyone have a suggestion for a mouthpiece that is somewhere in the middle?

Had a 5RV Lyre. Nice mouthpiece. I was also using a M30 which is darker sounding. Then picked up an M30 Lyre about two weeks ago ..... freer blowing ... and love it.

It's all about trying out as many mouthpieces as you can. You'll not know how they will sound or feel beforehand, that has as much to do with you as it does the mouthpiece. I'm pretty new to the clarinet world and rather than trying out many different facings I've been trying as many different brands of a medium-open medium-lay facing as I can. All around 1.10/1.11, I've tried Rico, Vandoren, Greg Smith, G Langenus, Charles Bay and MoBa mouthpieces and they are all very different even though they have similar openings. The ones that share a common blank are closer together than the others but it really just comes down to what works for you.
Through all the ones that I mentioned, the Charles Bay ended up being the one that worked for me, but I'm sure I'll revisit all the others soon and find I like one of the others better (ad infinitum.)

I am impressed by the Rico Reserve X5. Facing seems to be similar to the 5RV Lyre, but the sound and quality of manufacture are, IMO, superior. For a street price under one hundred dollars I think it competes very well with many of the "boutique" mouthpieces on the market!

I agree that the CL5 is bright. I use it for playing jazz, and it rings through nicely. Otherwise, I play on a Vandoren M30 lyre. It has a similar feel, but sounds a bit mellower.
