some pain may be related to the angle you're having your jaw open (not all mouthpieces are alike, there are minute "thickness" variations).

You may want to see your dentist and/or a jaw surgeon if you suffer from some kind of beginning TMJ (tempromandibular) dysfunction or locking jaw problem. Maybe that refaced mouthpiece just hits some (not so) sweet spot in your jaw mechanism, it's difficult to tell from here.

Re a low-budget alternative, you may want to try a Fobes Debut mouthpiece. Really.
