Baussnern Serenade for clarinet violin and piano
Author: Andrez444

i have been searching for some more clarinet violin and piano rep to perform, and searches on this site have confirmed the corner stones of exisiting repertoire and also some new ideas.

One piece that seems missing from searches is the this 19th century trio written by Waldermar Von Baussnern for Heinrich Baermann, ( a top player in his day) which is delightfully written for each of the three players.

Upon further searches I discovered a recording of it of a live radio recording from the "Third Programme" (UK)

Colin Lawson makes brief reference to the work in his The Cambridge Companion to the Clarinet.

It is listed on ISMLP, though I have also been able to locate a copy from a publisher.

As the repertoire for these forces isn't huge, I am surprised this work doesn't get performed often, as it is really nice.

Does anyone know of it?

Hi Ken

I found the performance at the following link.

Took a little time to work out the audio but it played fine in the end.

A really good performance with great clarity from the clarinetist.

I hope you enjoy it.

I am not at home to verify this but I understood Baussnern's Serenade was written for Richard Muhlfeld. If memory serves, the Serenade was written in the very late 19th century and first published in the early 20th century.

I think that indeed was the case.

In a previous post I mentioned mistakenly Heinrich Baermann, who of course was the clarinetist for whom Weber wrote his great works for.

The link is http://www.channels.com/episodes/show/17303646/Baussnern-Serenade. (Andrez444, you make a link by enclosing the address in wedges, < at the beginning and > at the end).

The playback doesn't start by itself. You have to click on "Download Video."

It's a very mild-mannered piece. The performance is quite good, but I'm not sure it has enough substance to be worth performing more often than once in a long while. Still, it's interesting to know about.

If you're looking for any more recent pieces for this instrumentation, check out this website:

http://verdehrtrio.com/

Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr and her husband have commissioned over 300 pieces from some of the best composers of our time. Some of the examples I heard at a recent seminar were just breath taking.
