Now that I'm getting better at "clarineting" I'd like to get some type of recorder to be able to listen to my playing. I don't want to break the bank, but I obviously want something that is of sufficient quality that I can assess my tone and overall sound quality. (And I don't trust the glowing reviews on sales websites.) Does anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks.

any of the Zoom's are great quality. There's also the external microphone option that you could hook up to your computer. I just put one on up eBay because I bought a Zoom. It's done great for me, but I wanted to be able to record my lessons, without having my computer next to me.

If you want to use your computer, I use DAK Wave Editor - http://www.dak.com/tutorials/V6_Editor/index.htm - and a Samson mic which plugs into a USB slot on the computer, but you can use the mic built into the computer instead, although sound will probably not be as good.
I like to use this setup along with a midi file, which shows the notes on the screen, to play with accompaniment, using Notation software.
Good luck with your "clarineting", I started again about 3-1/2 years ago after a 53 year break.

I can recommend the Edirol R-09 from Roland. It has a newer version R-09rh which you can find at least from Ebay, because it has been discontinued. I still use the R-09, it is very easy to use and is very portable to take for anywhere. It has also suprisingly good audio quality with the mic it has.
